10MM
The 10MM has become the .41
Magnum of the auto world. It has developed a cult classic following among those
who think this is the best all around auto pistol cartridge. The 10MM was
developed to be "The Replacement" for the .45 A.C.P. by offering a flatter
shooting, harder hitting but still controllable cartridge. The first 10MM
platform was the Bren 10 By Dornaus and Dixon with the original ballistics set
at 1200 fps with a 200 grain bullet. Ammunition was originally made by Norma.
The gun and cartridge were given the full blessing and support by none other
than Jeff Cooper who pioneered much of what is known today as modern pistol
craft. With the slow switch over from revolvers to autos by law enforcement and
the staggering failures of 9mm (including the famous FBI Miami shoot out) it
would have seemed that the 10MM was in the right place and the right time to
become the heir successor to the next generation of sidearm calibers for law
enforcement who were continually being outgunned by the bad guys. Unfortunately
the guns size and recoil were a problem to many in law enforcement and it was
requested that the ammo be downloaded for more controllability; in essence the
10MM Lite. Since the power of the cartridge was being downloaded, S&W shortened
the cartridge and ballistics into the then new .40 S&W and put the cartridge
into a 9mm sized platform. Many referred to the new cartridge as "Short&Weak."
The .40 S&W prevailed and became the standard for many in law enforcement with
some departments moving into .357 Sig to obtain ballistics closer to the .357
Magnum which was rated the No.1 one shot stopper. The 10MM faded off with only a
small dedicated following keeping the cartridge alive. It is interesting to note
that the FBI who started much of this ended up going with a bunch of new guns
chambered in ... wait for it ... .45 A.C.P. Truth is stranger than fiction.
Anyway, bullets for the .40 S&W will work in the 10MM and I
give you a good selection to choose from.
