.44 Caliber

The array of bullets for .44 will cover any application from light duty target use to bullets for Cowboy Action to the world famous SSK Heavyweight for serious hunting use. With a renewed interest in .44 Special the lighter weight bullets will do double duty in these guns as well as the .44 Magnums. One of the most popular big bore calibers of all time with the development of the first .44 Magnum being spurred on by the late great Elmer Keith. Eventually there will be a Thunderhead version coming into the lineup, so keep checking back for this development.
The 180 grain Truncated Cone and the 200 grain Round Nose Flat Point are popular for Cowboy Action and both bullets can be sized for use in .44/40.
Speaking of sizing its a good idea to let me know what firearm you are using to get the right diameter of bullet for your application. For many years the standard size was .429 and normally I go .001 over nominal diameter but with the advent of the Ruger Blackhawks and Redhawks most of these gun barrels were on the plus side of .430. Ruger makes great guns and I own several myself but tight tolerances were never their strong point but they have gotten better. As a result of so many 44's with larger barrels SAMMI specs for the nominal diameter went to .430 on jacketed bullets and cast went to .431 which solved a lot of problems for Ruger customers. (On occasion I have had to do .432 for some of these guns.) S&W were generally tighter and .430 for cast will usually work fine. If you have an early gun from S&W it may be a good idea to have it checked as it may need .429
A lot of .44 caliber imports have been showing up for Cowboy Action and its best to have the cylinder throats measured and the barrels slugged to determine a proper fit.
