This bullet is the flagship of the company. It is not only the first bullet I ever cast but it also paved the way for other Truncated Cone designs that the company founded its very beginnings with. This design represents a cast version of the Hornaday jacketed bullet and is the Hensley and Gibbs design rather than the inferior knock off that most everyone else sells. (Not wanting to infringe on the copyright design of H&G, other mold manufacturers changed the nose profile thus destroying the feed reliability of the design.) The contact point on the ogive duplicates the same ogival contact point as the standard Round Nose configuration thus giving the design 100% feed reliability. This design is the outcome from the joint venture between Hornaday and the Air Force in the early seventies. When faced with the upcoming change in military sidearms from .45 to 9mm the Air Force sought to improve the stopping power of the 9mm by coming up with a nose profile that would feed 100% but give improved stopping power over traditional 9mm Round Nose since hollowpoints were not permitted. Going back to the research that General Hatcher had performed, bullets that had flats on the noses provided a higher degree of stopping power than their Round Nose counterpart. Since bullets in automatics do not ride on the tip of the nose but rather on the side leading up to the nose ( The Ogive) it was important to duplicate that contact point precisely. The result that Hornaday and the Air Force came up with that met all their criteria was the Truncated Cone. (Interestingly enough the design seems to come from Germany sometime in the late 1800s) This was commonly referred to for many years as The Air Force design. The design was executed in 9mm first and then Hornaday duplicated it in .45. Wayne Gibbs brought the design to the cast bullet world shortly after with great success as the design had another benefit: superb accuracy. The accuracy was a big improvement over traditional Round Nose designs. Accuracy levels of 1 inch or better at 25 yards. Later on it was discovered that this was the superior design and weight for bowling pin matches (being a winner at Second Chance) and thus became The Bowling Pin Bullet. A truly great design. Cartridge O. A. L. (Over All Length) Start at 1.200" The bullet can be adjusted to a longer O. A. L. if needed. Adjust in small increments
These are cast from our Target grade alloy which is rated up to 900-1000 fps and are ideal for .45 ACP speeds providing less chance of bounce back and splatter when engaging steel knockdown targets. Machine gun users can specify the premium alloy for full auto use for an additional cost. (P. O. R.)
