.45/70

One of the all time great calibers, the .45/70 is still going strong after 150 years with its popularity at a all time high.
Having been chambered in every type of firearm imaginable its versatility knows no bounds. The guns available range from a derringer (I still shudder at that one) to revolvers like the BFR to Thompson Center Contenders ( both in pistol and rifle form (( one of my personal favorites)) to Marlin lever guns and numerous single shot rifles including various Highwall actions and of course the most famous the Sharps Rifle. ( With extreme interest regenerated in long distance shooting by the movie Quigley Down Under)
The .45/70 was a very popular conversion on Mauser 98 Actions with gunsmiths. With the action being very strong one could load the 45/70 to near .458 Magnum ballistics. The cartridge is going to be around for another 150 years.
I offer many variations in cast bullets for this cartridge as this caliber was made for cast bullets and are the superior choice over any other type of bullet construction.
Rifling rates of twist vary widely so its important to match the right weight of bullet to the gun. Bore sizes varied in many of the older single shot rifles with some diameters being as large as .462/.463. If you are unsure it would be best to get the gun slugged to determine the right size. Modern rifles will generally be all right with .458/.459 diameters. I offer the bullets both in Hardcast ( 20 plus BHN rated to 2000 fps.) and Softcast out of a 20 to 1 alloy of lead and tin. Bullets are available with our Teflon High Temp Lube (standard) for smokeless powder or with a SPG type lube for Black Powder application for an additional surcharge. (P.O.R.) The bullets are also available Unlubed and Unsized for those that wish to apply their own lube.
A final word about the bullet choices. Hardcast bullets with Black Powder lube will work just fine for long distance shooting provided that they fit the bore. (I know that this goes against conventional wisdom but I have numerous examples of customers targets to prove this.) It is not always mandatory to shoot a soft bullet with soft lube with Black Powder.
If the barrel is oversized then you will need a Softcast version to expand at the low pressure that Black Powder generates in order for the bullet to expand and fill the bore. (Obturation of the bullet base).
Larger quantity discounts are available on all 45/70 bullets.
